Social Impact Design in Detroit

Designers have the ability to envision and integrate within processes, while achieving positive societal transformation.
How do they influence largest scale issues through design?
Based on her teaching and leading participation in various master level projects, Maria Luisa Rossi outlines integrated
design approaches for facilitating a collaborative process where designers bring together the user’s perspective and
needs, finding desirable solutions that aim towards societal changes.


Maria Luisa Rossi is a designer and educator who has worked in a wide range of design disciplines internationally.
Originally from Florence, Italy, she has worked and lived in Paris, Tokyo, Los Angeles designing private residences,
high-end hotels interiors, offices interiors architectures, creating furniture, home accessories and environmental art.
During her studies in Italy she designed a wearable computer which won the Mainichi international design competition that since 2017 is part of the permanent Design Collection of the Henry Ford Museum.

Her interdisciplinary attitude, business acumen, and brand strategy knowledge ensued her to be hired onto the team
that launched a new Graduate Program in Design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, where she is now
leading the MFA Integrated Design program.
